The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test is a two-part assessment for international medical graduates seeking to practice medicine in the UK.
Test has been replaced by the UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA).
The UKMLA will assess the core knowledge, skills, and behaviors required to practice medicine in the UK. It consists of two parts:

PLAB 1, now aligned with the UKMLA AKT, is a written SBA exam that evaluates essential medical knowledge.

Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)
PLAB 1 is a written examination consisting of 180 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions, completed over 180 minutes, designed to assess how well international medical graduates can apply medical knowledge to real clinical scenarios.
From 2024 onward, UK medical graduates will take the UKMLA-AKT, delivered in two online papers of 100 SBAs each, while international medical graduates will continue to sit the traditional PLAB 1 format.

This assessment focuses on real-world clinical scenarios, testing candidates' communication, clinical reasoning, and professional behavior. The CPSA is a key component of the UKMLA, ensuring that candidates are fully prepared to handle the responsibilities of practicing medicine in the UK.
