The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB)
The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test is a two-part assessment for international medical graduates seeking to practice medicine in the UK. test has been replaced by the UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA).
The UKMLA will assess the core knowledge, skills, and behaviors required to practice medicine in the UK. It consists of two parts:
- PLAB 1 is now the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) : PLAB 1 is a multiple-choice exam, A computer-based test assessing medical knowledge.

Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)
The Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) is a multiple-choice examination featuring single best answer (SBA) questions. Designed and overseen nationally by the Medical Schools Council, the AKT draws from a shared bank of exam papers. As part of the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), it consists of two papers, each containing 100 SBA questions, with a duration of two hours per paper. International medical graduates will continue to take the traditional PLAB 1 format, which includes 180 questions and lasts 180 minutes. The AKT will be conducted online under strict exam conditions, with in-person invigilation at each medical school to maintain a secure testing environment. The test covers a wide range of topics, including clinical management and medical ethics, ensuring candidates have the required knowledge to practice medicine in the UK. Serving as an essential step in the UKMLA pathway, the AKT assesses candidates’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, preparing them for clinical practice.

The Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA), formerly PLAB 2, is an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) that evaluates the practical skills of international medical graduates. This assessment focuses on real-world clinical scenarios, testing candidates’ communication, clinical reasoning, and professional behavior. The CPSA is a key component of the UKMLA, ensuring that candidates are fully prepared to handle the responsibilities of practicing medicine in the UK.
