The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB)

The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test is a two-part assessment for international medical graduates seeking to practice medicine in the UK.
Test has been replaced by the UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA).

The UKMLA will assess the core knowledge, skills, and behaviors required to practice medicine in the UK. It consists of two parts:

PLAB 1, now aligned with the UKMLA AKT, is a written SBA exam that evaluates essential medical knowledge

Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA)

The Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) is a national, computer-based examination used across the UK to select doctors for entry into various postgraduate training programmes — including General Practice, Psychiatry, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, and several hospital specialties.

The MSRA comprises two components, both completed on the same day through Pearson VUE test centres :

Professional Dilemmas (PD) Paper – a situational judgement test assessing professional behaviour, ethics, empathy, and decision-making in workplace scenarios.

Clinical Problem-Solving (CPS) Paper – multiple-choice, data-interpretation questions that test applied clinical reasoning across core medical disciplines.

MRCGP Applied Knowledge Test

The AKT is a summative assessment evaluating the knowledge base essential for independent general practice within the UK NHS. It encompasses clinical medicine, evidence-based practice, and primary care organization and management issues. The exam is conducted multiple times a year, with scheduled dates in January, April, July, and October 2025. For instance, the AKT in January 2025 has a test date of 29 January 2025, with reservations closing on 1 December 2024. Eligibility to sit the AKT requires candidates to be in Specialty Training Year 2 (ST2) or later and to have completed the necessary workplace-based assessments. All candidates must be registered with the RCGP before applying.

MRCGP Simulated Consultation Assessment

The SCA assesses a GP candidate’s ability to integrate and apply clinical, professional, and communication skills through simulated consultations. Candidates engage in various clinical scenarios to demonstrate their competence in patient care, diagnostic skills, and medical procedures. The SCA is conducted multiple times throughout the year. For example, the SCA in January 2025 has test dates from 8 to 10 January 2025, with reservations closing on 3 November 2024. Eligibility to take the SCA includes being in Specialty Training Year 3 (ST3) and having completed the requisite workplace-based assessments. As with the AKT, candidates must be registered with the RCGP prior to application.
